Once you receive your learner’s permit you are all set for the driving practice. Driving practice can be performed at the driving school or free of charge with a parent or a friend of yours (in other words - a supervisor, ‘handledare’ in Swedish). It’s up to you to decide which way you choose to practice. You can also combine both the driving school lessons and personal supervisor.
In order to take driving lessons you must meet the following requirements:
- you must hold a valid learner’s permit
- you must be at least 16 years old if you will only be driving a car
- you must be at least 17 years and 6 months old if you will be driving a light lorry
- you must be at least 17 years and 6 months old if you will be driving with a light trailer in tow
Note that lessons leading to a moped licence may only be given by an authorised instructor and you must be at least 14 years and 9 months old.
Who can be your supervisor?
Your supervisor (handledare) can be anyone who has a driving licence for at least 5 years and who is at least 24 years old
In order to become a supervisor one needs to apply for a permission to become a supervisor – handledarbevis. The price currently is 170 SEK, and the application form can be found at the website of the Swedish Transport Agency. Both you and your supervisor will need to take an introductory course (introduktionsutbildning), which is usually offered by the driving schools.
